FRANKENSTEIN FINGER

My finger is going to be OK!Last March I amputated the tip of my finger the first day of packing.

Today, my hard old black fingertip came off, almost 3 months to the date. It has been really loose the past few days. Dr Shealy said that it looks really good and that it will fill in and re-shape itself over the next few years. There is no need for any surgery or skin grafts. The more I use it, the better it will look. It healed over the bone and I will not have any bone loss.

It is all because of the many, many prayers from my sweet nieces and nephews, sisters and parents and grandparents and Todd and Taely! Thank you. Having my finger injured just as we were moving was an extremely stressful thing for me. It was probably one of the most stressful times in my life!

But all is well now! Thanks-my-family! I love you all so much!

BLUE CRAB FEAST

While "Ward Hopping" we met Eric & Dianne who were on a 2 week vacation here, from Utah. We became instant friends. They invited us to spend some time with them at their cottage on Kiawah Island. It was fantastic! We spent the day on the beach and found starfish and sand dollars. Then at night we pulled up the crab cage and had a blue crab feast! Thanks Eric & Dianne for sharing your vacation with us and teaching us about South Carolina. We'll vacation with you, on your vacation, anytime!

Blue crabs instantly turn red in boiling water (they also scream and howl....just kidding! It's pretty quick and painless!) It's getting them in the pot that's the trick!

NO BUBBLEGUM

I grew up in a home where we were not allowed to have bubblegum.This has somewhat carried over into my home (most of the time). If Taely is given a choice for a treat, I prefer it not to be gum.

While at the store today, Todd let Taely pick out a treat. Well she picked a lollipop with bubblegum inside and I told Todd to pick something different for her. This is what Todd chose for Taely...I think the gum would have been better!

Todd's work put on a Circus at the park for employees and their families. We had a fun day, but it ended up rainning...alot! It rains like this (and harder) every other day.

BUG

I let the dog out on the patio and as I closed the door (on the outside of the glass) there was this BIG BUG right in front of my face! I kind of freaked out! I was glad to see that it was on the outside. There are some interesting bugs here!

Daddy is our hero when it comes to "taking care" of the bugs. Taely thought the bug looked like a lobster. (We visit the Lobster tank at Wal-Mart and the Piggly Wiggly).

SNAKE!

I went to the car to get the beach bag (so I could wash the towels, not go to the beach like you were thinking…I don’t always play!!) Anyway, I SAW A SNAKE in the parking lot just next to the curb! Taely almost walked up to it! Our Marine neighbor was out for his morning walk and I showed him. He got a long stick and a butcher knife and cut the head off the snake. I thought it was a coral snake, but he said it was a king snake, not poisonous. He told me to recognize a poisonous snake look at the stripes, "red meets yellow, he’ll kill a fellow". I don’t care, a snake is a snake and this one is now dead!

On our way to Isle of Palms Beach we passed Boone Hall Plantation. There you can pick your own strawberries. I think Taely ate more than she put in the bucket.

"THE BLESSING OF THE FLEET" CASTAWAYS

The Blessing of the Fleet is a festival celebrating the opening of the shrimp season. All the commercial shrimp boats line up in the harbor and sail past the on-shore festival while a Priest blesses each individual shrimp boat with safety and a prosperous harvest. We learned about the festival from our realtor, who said to go down to the docks and you’ll see the boats. Well, we did find the boats at the docks and they told us to jump on because this was the last boat, so we did as we were told. Later while we were sailing in the harbor we found out that the party on the shrimp boat was a private party for family and friends of the shrimp boat captain only. There were so many people on the boat and not everyone knew each other, so we weren’t noticed. We fit in just fine. We met the captain and his wife and admitted that we were “castaways”. They laughed and welcomed us and we had a great time. They fed us and told us all about the shrimpin' industry and even invited us to come back next year, because we were now friends of the Shrimp Boat Karen.

SUNRISE AT FOLLY PIER

We woke up early on a Saturday morning to watch the sunrise from the beach. We ended up getting lost and watched the sun rise from the Interstate, but we still had a fun time. We went to the pier at Folly Beach. There were some serious fishermen and we watched them cast their lines out using long fishing poles. Taely had fun chasing the birds, which she felt she could pet if she had a ladder.

Everyone had a fishing cart like this one. WOW!

Taely had fun running around chasing the birds and in the end, we ended up running to the bathrooms!

Low Country Cookout

We were invited to a low country resident BBQ. The food was fantastic and very authentic for our area. We had a shrimp boil with sausage, potatoes and corn, crayfish and roasted oysters. The seafood had been caught just hours before and was very fresh. We shucked the oysters ourselves (pried open with a small knife) and ate them right off the half-shell with hot sauce. IT WAS GOOD!
Taely just ate the cake.

Funny Thing About the South

We had a scheduled service on our condo and when the service man got to our home he was all out of breath. I asked him if he was OK and he said he had just caught the "gator" that was out in the parking lot and return him to the pond that is just down the way from us. FUNNY!??

We spent the day visiting Patriots Point Harbor. We toured Aircraft Carrier Yorktown, Submarine Clamagore, the Destroyer Kaffey and the Coast Guard Cutter Ingham.

Liberty Jail

While in Nauvoo, we visited the home of Mary Field Garner, who is known as the "Last Leaf". She is Todd's 4th Great Grandmother. She lived with the Saints in Nauvoo after her parents had been taught the Gospel in England by Wilford Woodruff. She is known as the Last Leaf because she was the last person to personally know Joseph Smith and as of today, was the longest living member of the Church. She died in Utah at the age of 107.This marker is on the Trail of Hope.

We visited the Old Nauvoo Cemetery and found that the Webb headstones had been returned. The new headstones seem to be placed at the feet and the old are at the head.

Just 100 miles from our new home, we lost the rear tire. We were towed into Charleston and made it with our anymore problems. Now that the truck is repaired, the mechanic said that the company that serviced the truck before our trip did not tighten down the lugs enough. We are so thankful for our safety! We were traveling with the Missionaries and we had prayers coming from everywhere and that is why we were safe!
